A Sample of Gary Smith's Work
Gary first became fascinated with wood turning watching his dad turn segmented lamps and bracelets when Gary was a teenager in the early 50’s. But, it was;nt until I retired 40 years later that I started turning bowls, bracelets, pens and other small pieces. Gary joined AAW in 1999 and became more serious about his work. He has made many of his own tools and fixtures, including several boring bar systems. Gary has given demonstrations for MAW, Ann Arbor using the 1 ½" bar. MAW, Holly using the ¾" bar and DAW, Shelby Twp. using the 1" bar. His earlier work focused on segmented pieces, including 1 small end table and a 36" top, kitchen table. He has also made turned Wren houses, bird feeders and segmented out door planters. This past year he has been creating staved vessels of various sizes.
In the future Gary plans to design items with 3
rd
generation feature rings. This should keep him thinking for quite some time! Gary Smith |
