January 2008 Mike Foydel Mike Foydel has been working with wood for 40 years. He attended Western Michigan University and studied in the Industrial Education Department. He majored in Woodworking and minored in Drafting. Mike planned on teaching until has became a Detroit Fireman. While a fireman, Mike also owned a Magic, Puzzle and Toy store for 25 years. He manufactured many of the things he sold in the store. In 1984 he started Midwest Magic Manufacturing Inc. It is still in operation today. The things Mike makes have changed over the years, and he now concentrates on making things round. Mike owned a lathe for 15 years but only used it ot makes parts, (mostly spindle type). He has also been employed as a Professional Furniture builder, but now only do that type of work for family. Three years ago Mike became serious about wood turning and has done nothing but turn ever since. In that time he has attended 3 national Woodturning Conferences. He has had hands on training by Richard Raffan, Jimmy Clewes, Cindy Drozda, Alan Lacer and Al Stirt. He has also attended seminars by many renowned turners like Eli Avisera, Dave Hout, Graeme Priddle, Nick Cook, and many others. Mike believes in the sharing of ideas and skills with other turners. He has given demonstrations on bowl making, triangle boxes, chucking and work holding. His most recent demonstration was on threading.
